• 27 Feb 2012, there were 4 tickets in my backpack.
#1 Jakarta Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (Airasia)
#2 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to Vientiane Laos (Airasia)
#3 Vientiane Laos to KL Malaysia (Airasia)
#4 KL Malaysia to JKT Indonesia (Lion Air)

Yes there are no direct flight from Jakarta Indonesia to Vientiane Laos by Airasia. at least when i bought the tickets in 2011.

    My route:
Jakarta – Kuala Lumpur – Vientiane – Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng – Vientiane – Kuala Lumpur – Jakarta

Day 1:ย  CGK to KUL (plane)
Day 2: KUL to VTE (plane)
Day 3: Vientiane to Luang Prabang ( Sleeping bus)
    Day 4: LP
Day 5: LP to Vang Vieng (Mini van)
    Day 6: Vang Vieng
Day 7: VV to Vientiane (Mini van)
    Day 8: VTE to KUL
    Day 9-11-: KUL
Day 12: KUL to CGK (plane)

Total spent for Laos and KL approx. USD 610*:

    Flights USD 200
Local transportation + tours + entrance fees USD 100
    Food & accommodation USD 160
Misc (gifts, nightlife, others) USD 150

*i honestly spent less than this! (i think) … and maybe should have been way less if i didn’t go to KL. What did i do in KL? party of course! Hah!

    The currencies:
in Indonesia = Indonesia Rupiah (IDR) = Rp
in Laos = Laos Kip (LAK) = โ‚ญ
in Malaysia = Malaysia Ringgit (MYR) = RM

    approximately 1 USD = 9200 IDR = 8700 LAK = 3000 RM. – Feb 2012 –

    Recommended ATM / Banks: BCEL.

Places i have seen in Laos!
    Hor Prakeo
    Wat Sisaket

    Luang Prabang:
Kuang si Falls –> Definitely my favorite
    National Museum
    Wat Xieng Thong
    That Phousy

    Vang Vieng:
Tham Phu Kam cave –> 2nd favorite

Fun things to do (according to me)!

    • rent a bike and explore the city
    • visit the night market in Vientiane and Luang Prabang
    • try the local food stalls: buffalo skewers, pork skewers, banana pancake
    • they have sort of noodle soups, that also taste good!
    • swim in Kuang Si Falls
    • walk around Luang Prabang
    • all you can eat buffet at the night market in Luang Prabang
    • bar-hopping in Vang Vieng
    • biking to Tham Phu Kham cave in Vang Vieng

Next time i go to Laos, i will:

    1. explore Xieng Khouang province (Plain of Jars)
    2. explore Champasak province (Wat Phou)
    3. maybe visit That Luang and Wat Xieng Khouan (Buddha Park) in Vientiane
    4. swim in Kuang Si Falls (again!)
    5. swim in the lagoon outside Tham Phu Kham cave and explore the cave more
    6. visit more caves in Vang Vieng
    7. tubing in Vang Vieng (yeah i didnt have time and energy to party that much when i was there!)
    8. bar hopping in Vang Vieng
    9. ummm… any suggestion?

    • get a free official tourist map at ispot TIC on 1/F Sin Sai Mai Bldg. Manthatoulad Rd
    • but the best map to use in Laos is Hobo Maps!
    • free Wifi and computer use (if you didnt bring any laptop) at iSpot
    • iSpot is the best TIC i’ve been to so far! run and owned by a korean – laotian couple
    • almost all places shuts down at 22:00 in Vientiane and LP
    • there’s one old bowling place in LP that opens till late.
    • beware of the bag snatcher when you are riding a bike, don’t put your bag on your bike basket
    • most of the beef skewers are from buffaloes, not from cows! Chewy = buffaloes
    • if you need to eat halal food, it is always better to go to an Indian restaurant
    • You only can find a few ATMs in Vang Vieng. Almost all are not working properly /running out of money most of the time, bring enough cash before going to VV
    • you can easily find accomodation around USD 15-30/r/n (AC, TV, Wifi) in the backpackers area
    • the drive from LP to VV is really really long, bumpy and twisty. take an anti motion sickness tablet!
    • VV is a party town! the drinking starts from noon. really!
    • alcohol and illegal drugs are easy to find in Laos. stay away from the unsafe local alcohol and the illegal drugs
    • watch out for fake brand name alcohol
    • several bars in VV sell magic mushroom, weed, opium on their menu
    • cops in Laos are pretty much corrupted
    • most of the owner of the bars in VV are cops, if you take drugs (which you shouldn’t) better to take them while you’re still at the bar, NEVER take them at your hotel or some where else
    • it is always best to never take illegal drugs! HAH!
    • wear a shirt with sleeves, a sarong if you are wearing short skirt/pants when you enter a Wat (temple)
    • take off you shoes/sandals when entering a Wat
    • everything they sell in Joma Bakery cafe are really DELICIOUS! (you can find them in Vientiane and LP)
    • you can always bargain at the market or when taking a Tuk-Tuk
    • Ummm i think that’s all. Enjoy your trip! ๐Ÿ™‚

I will make another post about my days in KL. ๐Ÿ˜‰
